    עֲרֵבוּתf. (preced. wds.) security, pledge. B. Bath. 174a כולן לשון ע׳ הן all these expressions mean only guaranty, opp. to קבלנות an unconditional agreement to pay a neighbors debt. Gen. R. s. 93, beg. מלעשות ע׳ בין אדם לחבירו from going security in transactions between a man and his neighbor (v. עֵרָבוֹן II); Yalk. ib. 150. Midr. Till. to Ps. 119:121 עשינו עֲרֵבוּתֵינוּ עשהוכ׳ we have done what we were pledged to do, do thou now thy duty. Ex. R. s. 27 הכנסת עצמך לע׳ זו ליעשות ראש (not זה) thou hast made thyself enter this pledge, that thou mayest become the head (victor in the contest). Ib. ומה היתה עֲרֵבוּתָן and what was their pledge? (Answ. ref. to Ex. 24:7). Ib. ואם לאו חענשו בע׳ but if you will not guard the Law, you will be fined by that pledge (forfeit your childrens life). Tanḥ. Vayigg. 5; a. e.
